What is Normal Map for 3D Printing?
3D printing reproduces geometry, not shading, so a normal map alone cannot add bumps to a printed part. Normal maps are still valuable for visualising a design, for texture-aware slicers that read surface data, and for multicolour or resin workflows where a displacement height map is converted to geometry. From normal map to printable geometry
The normal map is a visualisation format, not a printable one. To print relief, take the source height map, use it as a displacement modifier (Blender) or a height-driven extrude, apply the modifier to real geometry, then export STL/3MF. Keep the displacement subdivision high enough that the printed slope is smooth, and remember resin printers reproduce fine height steps better than FDM.
Rendering your print
For product photos or portfolio renders, apply the normal map in your renderer to show realistic surface response. This helps clients approve a design before any physical prototype is made, and it is far cheaper than printing multiple iterations.
